What is Sinigang?

Sinigang is one of the more popular dishes in Filipino cuisine. It is a Filipino soup or stew characterized by its sour and savory taste.

The short story "Sinigang" was written in 2001 by Marie Aubrey J. Villaceran under her pen name Marby Villaceran. The short story narrates how Liza deals with the issue of her father, who had an extramarital affair with Sylvia and consequently had a son, Lem. It took place in Liza's home, where she and her aunt, Tita Loleng, were cooking sinigang, which is her father's favorite dish. She remembered how anxious she was to meet her dad’s mistress. On top of that, she remembered how her father cried and asked for forgiveness.

Moral Values

These are the lessons I learned in the amazing short story “Sinigang”

1.) Importance of your Family

Lack of unity or cohesiveness can break any family. On the other hand, a strong family can withstand all adversities. It can help intensify emotional intimacy, which in turn can foster feelings of empathy and compassion in a child as well as help families resolve conflict, work as a team, and enjoy each other's company.

The story "Sinigang" will really teach us about the importance of having strong relationships between family members, especially for those families that are experiencing the same issue as Liza's family.

2.) Forgiveness

Each one of us makes mistakes that can hurt anyone. Sometimes, it is so hard to forgive, especially when a mistake affects your entire life. But, the only thing that will make your life peaceful is that you need to learn how to forgive. We need to forget who hurt us, but never forget what lesson they left us. In this way, we are freeing ourselves from hatred and pain, and bringing ourselves to the peace that helps us go on with life.

3.) Faithfulness

Being faithful gives you a sense of pride, especially if you know that you treat your partner with kindness, respect, and honesty. It will make your lover trust you, and with trust, he/she surrenders and gives all to you. Without trust, you will never fully receive all the blessings your lover brings.

Cheating is not a temptation, but cheating is a choice. In the story, we saw the negative effects of having an extramarital affair with someone. The one who suffers the most is not the couple, but their child. It can hurt them emotionally and physically. They will carry the pain throughout their lives.

Impact of the Story

As a 21st-century literature learner, the short story "Sinigang" left a huge impact on me. Life is not always a fairy tale, where there is always a happy ending. Rather, life is our own unfinished book. As our lives' main characters, we must be aware of the conflicts that we create. We must know how it will affect us and our story's side characters, starting before making a choice and after facing the consequences. It is always written down based on our choices. When we are fully aware of the current chaotic situation that's when we find peace and happiness in our lives.

we forgive, we recover, and we grow
